Girls (and parents), we talk a lot about the pressures of adolescence: parties, drugs, alcohol, sex, etc. Now, however, research shows that you have to face pressures through the very devices that keep you so connected to your friends and significant others. Read this column from cleveland.com writter Connie Schultz about text pressure that girls face from boys. Within this article is a link to That’sNotCool.com that offers advice and help. Girls, tell us what you think.
1.) Do you think girls (and boys) are being pressured through texting?
2.) Do you have friends whose boyfriends/girlfriends text them more than 10 times in an hour?
3.) Do you think your generation faces more or less peer pressure because of texting, instant messaging, and other online communications? Why?
4.) What do you think parents can do to help their daughter/son avoid these pressures?
5.) What did you think of the website That’sNotCool.com?

I can’t say that I’ve been pressured through texts, but I know there are people who have been, especially teenagers.

Mrs. Ball,
You don’t know me, but my cousin told me about GEMS. I wanted to let you know theat we, as girls, are just so vulnerable. TI was at one time pressure into doing things I didnt want to do, and I think that GEMS helps girls very much.

Hi, Lizette - I am glad that you have your cousin to talk to you. That’s what GEMS is all about - girls helping each other get through confusing and difficult times to become strong, happy, and independent women! It takes practice to stand up for what you want or don’t want to do. Keep trying because you are a GEM!
