Taking Control of Cyberbullying

December 26th, 2008 · 5 Comments · Monthly Discussion Topics

In recent news there was another case of cyberbuylling; this time it was in Missouri and it was through text messaging. On our December Discussion blog many of you agreed that parents needed to monitor and be aware of their child’s Internet usage, do you think the same applies to text messaging? Think about this: in the case from Missouri the police charged the woman who sent the text messages with harrassment, do you think this should be considered a crime?

Check out some of the cyberbullying statistics. Why do you think it is such a problem? Do you think kids think that they are harrassing each other when they are texting or instant messaging or posting on MySpace or Facebook? What can we do to stop this growing problem?

Wow, it seems like everything sent through computer messages and phones can be bad. I think it should be considered a crime because the adult should have known a little better. Kids, girls mostly, should be careful in what they say in these messages, Like in the December Question, the mother was stupid enough to push that girl so far as to kill herself.

All I can say is wow. Some people can be that rude and mean, huh? Seriously, give the people their space and time to think it over. It’s their problem, not your’s. so don’t get into it if the person doesn’t want you to, whether you like it or not.

I think that monitoring text messages is a good idea because just as much harm can be done with phones as the computer. Harassing people through text messages should be considered a crime. Cyberbullying is such a problem because people who are shy or unwelcomed feel better facing the computer, not someone else. This creates more bullies. When someone posts something on a social-networking cite, I am not sure that they realize the harm that could be done. It’s easier to harass someone through texting or the internet than talking to their face. You should think of it this way: Would I say this to someone’s face?
